Baumgartner Restoration, self-initiated
Branding
Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration is the oldest art conservation studio in Chicago. The studio is ran by Julian Baumgartner who succeeded his father, R. Agass, in 2011. Julian also runs their Youtube channel detailing the processes of a variety of painting restorations.
The brand identity focuses on and celebrates a core tenet of conservation: they are artisans, but not the art itself.
For the color scheme, I wanted the aesthetic to feel natural and meditative, much like Julian’s work. I started with studio products in mind: Belgian linens, Washi kozo papers, and adhesive agents. During research, I discovered Baumgartner (Germanic) meant Tree Gardener or Orchard Carer. With that, I settled on a washed ivy and beige pulp.
Extending from the orchard imagery, I created the Chalice mark based off a symbol of Dionysus, god of Orchards.
The second symbol created—a coin-like seal—is based off the Asclepius, god of Restoration (albeit a traditional medicinal kind, I felt like the studio’s work was akin to that anyway). This is to serve as a ‘Stamp of Craftsmanship’.
The final icons, meant for miscellaneous stationary, is to be used with friends, family, and repeat patrons. They are a nod to Julien’s use of fishing line and tightening keys in many canvas stretchers.
The wordmark’s typeface is based off one used by Julian’s father on a book from 1975.
